Academic Senate Highlights 2003/04

- Marsha
Elliott, faculty and coordinator of the High School Program, was
named the Teacher of the year for 03/04,.Congratulations Marsha!
- Kathryn Fay,
DSPS faculty/counselor, decided to retire after 26 years of
service and devotion to DSPS students and SCE. She will be missed
by all!
- Barbara
Bennett was congratulated for her 3 years of service as the United
Faculty President and has worked long and hard to serve all the
full-time faculty at NOCCCD.
- The SCE
Senate hosted the very successful Jan. 04 Joint Senates/Joint
Faculty Unions meeting which was held at Anaheim Almost 100
participants composed of faculty, managers, administration and
several board members spent the day on numerous topics :
accreditation issues, budget issues, and a review of shared
governance. Guest speakers included Alan Frey from CCA, Greg
Gilbert from the ASCCC Executive Committee, and Kate Clark, ASCCC
President. The day also included a panel discussion of the
Full-Time Faculty Obligation issue and a showing of Benjamin
Zander’s film “Leadership-An Art of Possibility” .
- SCE Senate
members participated in the ASCCC Conferences in Fall 2003 and
Spring 2004
- The SCE
Senate worked on a number of items for the SCE Strategic Plan
including completing the Orientation Handbook for Faculty, the SCE
Senate webpage was finished, and adjunct faculty email addresses
were collected as a means to communicate faculty issues.
- The SCE
Senate President worked very closely with the other faculty groups
all year to deal with the issue of the Full-Time Faculty
Obligation recalculation proposal. The faculty groups were able to
come up with a position that was advantageous to both faculty and
the District.
- SCE Senate
members, under the leadership of President Sibley-Smith, and in
conjunction with the other constituent groups, reviewed Board
Policies and Procedures all year as a part of the complete review
being undertaken by Chancellor’s Cabinet.
- SCE Senate
members participated in 18 SCE and District shared governance
committees in 2003-04.
